WITH CYANIDE GOLD MINING: OBSOLETE IN EUROPE AND WHERE IN COSTA RICA? ABC

RELEASE *

WITH CYANIDE GOLD MINING: OBSOLETE IN EUROPE AND WHERE IN COSTA RICA?
European Union statement on cyanidation
Legislature, Board of Benefactors
THURSDAY June 17 3:00 pm

the 5th of May the European Parliament issued a resolution on the general prohibition of mining technologies based on cyanide in the European Union.

In his recital A, B, and C that parliament is blunt in stating that:

In 2010, International Year of Biodiversity, the UN has invited everyone to take action specific to safeguard the biodiversity of the planet ... "cyanide is a highly toxic chemical used in gold mining, ranked as one of the main pollutants of water" and potential to "have a catastrophic and irreversible impact on human health and the environment and hence in biological diversity." Has been shown by the Ministries of Environment of several European countries' concern about the technologies used and planned to dangerous mining activities in various areas of the region that pose significant environmental risks with potential transboundary consequences "
also

The statement noted that in Europe during the last 25 years "have been 30 major accidents related to the cyanide spill" including the dumping of more than 100.000 liters of water contaminated with cyanide in the Tisza-Danube river system, considered one of the worst environmental disasters in Central Europe and there is no real guarantee that such disasters do not happen again.

benefits on the other hand, the statement said, do not outweigh the risks, noting that the ban on the use of cyanide for 2011 is the only guarantee to protect rivers and ecosystems "cyanide pollution from mining activities" Where there's smoke there's fire ... IS THAT "LEARN FROM THE EXPERIENCE ... NOT FALL INTO THE SAME MISTAKE OTHER COMPANIES HAVE COMMITTED ... OUR BIODIVERSITY OUR COMMUNITIES OUR RIVERS POLLUTION NOT DESERVE TO CYANIDE.

In this regard, we applaud the decision of the Court of Appeals of Administrative to maintain the precautionary measures that prevent the PM Crucitas continued destruction of forests and to begin operations that put at risk the environment. We ask the President Laura Chinchilla repeal of Decree 34801-MINAET to circumvent the law has allowed Costa Rica to facilitate PM Crucitas.

what happens to the dispute over Crucitas - Costa Rica

enumerate the most significant issues about the process in the Administrative Court on Crucitas mining project to see if we can improve our general understanding of the matter:

1) Apreflofas had presented this trial in 2008 and UNOVA's adjuvant.

2) At that time requested precautionary measures - that is, that the company can not begin until full trial is resolved, the danger that would imply that if the trial gave us the reason to the opposition.

2.1 The judge rejected in 2008 because they were those of the Constitutional Court and not was necessary to double.

3) April 16, when the Constitutional Court ruled and up the steps, in addition to panic, ran to ask for them again and were reported by Judge next day .

4) The the Environmental Protection Agency and the company filed an appeal with these precautionary measures
4.1. This is what today was in the audience tomorrow decide whether to keep the work stopped until the trial ends

5) Tomorrow, also is a settlement hearing, at which we will stand because it is the duty, but not There is nothing to reconcile, the attorney also submitted a letter saying they would not reconcile.

6) On Wednesday's preliminary hearing to see what the allegations are to develop and produce the evidence to be submitted after there can not be changed or added tests.

7) the trial starts, who knows when.

pro mining group prevents

attached press release of the 5 council members who have formed a pact municipal sancarleño which opposes the mining and Crucitas project.

last week by a majority of 6 to 3 approved an agreement which express the strong opposition to mining. In the session on Monday, a group headed by the chief of staff of the company and other employees of the company, broke into the municipal council meeting demanding that they attend. No appointment and had asked what they wanted was that the Council will back their decision and not to endorse. As there were other communities to attend and had complied with respect to request a hearing, they proposed to wait for another session, even the group of trustees of the pact, agreed to go into session to Coopevega to address the issue and other municipal issues . Do not listen to reason, clapped, whistled, sang, broke, to the extent that prevented the session continuity municipal.

is outrageous to see how these mining companies, which say that respect the law and order, manipulate a group of people and send them to interrupt a municipal meeting, however, the rulers of the Covenant remained firm in their position, which is a warning to the company that you create with the right to twist the arm of the community leaders and municipal councils. In this case, they were wrong because the council demonstrated its firm and dignified.

was most curious to see the councilors and the National Liberation tearing their hair out because they failed to respond to the community, when we ourselves have had to seek audience with 2 or more months before the City Council passed and only gave us 30 minutes to my exposure when the company have given up to 2 full sessions, when we welcome the statement of the fellow the mayor, who is now in the minority, we are threatened us out of the meeting, so we respect the solemnity of the area.

The company says that we we attacked the institutions, and although we had every reason to make a fuss as the day we were humiliated and discriminated against in the inspection of the Constitutional Court or whenever the council earlier we closed doors, we've never done.

PRESS RELEASE

Given the situation presented in the municipal meeting on Monday 7 June 2010, the group of trustees who form the Municipal Sancarleño Covenant, we wish to express our position.

The staff in charge of Industrias Infinito, leading a group of residents from Coopevega, stormed the municipal meeting, trying to force the council to attend them.

At the request of modification by one of the minority councilors, requesting the change agenda to be served, they were informed following:

1. On the agenda was scheduled the attention of other groups and communities that had made the application concerned and were waiting, no disrespect meant to attend to the communities that had complied with the procedure.

2. That the group backing the company, had not applied the appropriate audience to be served and the matter was not an emergency, but intended that the Council changed the position of rejecting the Crucitas mining project, approved at the previous meeting and obviously prevent the ratification of this.

3. was informed that group, to make the request in advance, as lack of time and commitments to other neighbors, preventing attention at that time. Even members of the Municipal Sancarleño Covenant, made a commitment to go into session to Coopevega on Sunday 27 June, which corresponds to the third extraordinary session of the month and therefore is not due diets.

4. Even that the City was willing to move into session to Coopevega to address their concerns.

5. First due justification, the group obviously led by a senior official and other employees of the mining company, began to boycott and disrupt, going so far as to prevent the continuation of session.

Therefore, makers who formed the Municipal Sancarleño Covenant, we reiterate and make clear to the public that:

- We are ready to embrace all groups and communities to respect the established procedure for requesting a hearing.

- reaffirm our offer to fight and sancarleños citizens, a city of open doors in order and respect.

- We will not allow the municipal council meeting be disrespected by special interests to the detriment of the common good and always keep a firm stance against any action manipulative political show or you want to boycott do with our Council.
